Sisters ride to find a cure

For the Messmore sisters, their planned 80-mile cycling tour through Skagit Valley is more than an opportunity to take part in the 2013 Ride to Defeat ALS. The two-day cross country bicycle tour is a ride being done with love and commitment for and in memory of their late mother, Loni Messmore of Sunnyside. Mrs. Messmore died in 2012 from complications from Lou Gehrig's Disease, a devastating disease that took her from her daughters just six months after her diagnosis. This coming weekend the sisters, Brionna Messmore Hughes of Zillah and Brittany Messmore of Sunnyside, will gather their fellow teammates to hold a fundraiser to aid in the fight against a disease which has impacted their family so tragically. "We are holding a car wash Sunday, July 21, at the Sunnyside Pizza Hut parking lot from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. All the proceeds will be added to the 'Team Lorna Jean' fundraising efforts," said Hughes. "The team is named after my mother," she added. She said there are 12 members on the team, including Emily and Melissa Stamschror, Jacob Brandvold and Trevor Fernandez, all of Sunnyside. The proceeds from Sunday's car wash will be added to the team's current fundraising efforts, already amounting to more than $770. This will be the second year Team Lorna Jean has cycled along the Skagit Valley ALS course. Last year Team Lorna Jean raised $2,287 to aid the ASL Association's Evergreen Chapter's research and patient support projects. "We are hoping to top last year's fundraising efforts," Hughes said. "This disease is something that has affected many families in our area," Hughes noted. There is no treatment or known cause, she added. "We just want to spread awareness about the disease and let people know how urgent it is to find a cure," she added. While the Messmore sisters' youngest sister, Chloe, is still too young to ride in the Skagit Valley event, she will be helping her older sisters at the car wash, Hughes said.
