Miss Sunnyside candidate Ashley Davis

2013-14 Miss Sunnyside candidate Ashley Davis has always enjoyed reading. As someone who has found books to be enjoyable since she was a young child, she would like to inspire younger children to pick up a book for the same reason. If crowned Miss Sunnyside, Davis wants to work with local schools to develop a reading program. That program would involve the Miss Sunnyside court reading to fifth grade students. "Sometimes students lose focus on the joy of reading because of all the assigned reading that has to be completed once they enter middle school," said Davis. "I want them to learn that reading can be fun before they are told what they must read." Davis is seeking the Miss Sunnyside title because she believes it is important to serve as a role model for others. "Miss Sunnyside can be a positive influence," she said, stating past Miss Sunnyside courts have influenced her throughout the years. "My mother was third princess from 1990 to 1991," Davis said, noting that influence spans an entire generation. Her parents are Amy and Scott Davis, and she has a younger sister. Davis said she likes the idea of helping people and aspires to pursue a degree at Washington State University in the medical field. She would like to become a nurse or radiologist. "I like the idea of providing others with comfort and reassurance...I've been inspired by the medical professionals who have helped me throughout the years," said Davis, stating she has had positive experiences with doctors, nurses and radiologists. Speaking of her dreams, the Miss Sunnyside candidate said she believes whomever earns the title must be a strong leader and a strong female figure in the community. "Being a good role model is being someone who reflects well on the community," said Davis. She said the court must travel to different communities and Miss Sunnyside is tasked with being a positive example of what Sunnyside is like. The 2013-14 Miss Sunnyside Pageant will be held Sunday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. at the Sunnyside High School auditorium. Rod Smith/Daily Sun News Ashley Davis will be one of 14 young ladies competing for the 2013-14 Miss Sunnyside title on Sunday, Oct. 6. If selected for the title, she would like to develop a partnership with the Sunnyside School District to inspire young readers. 1 Jennie McGhan 7/19/2013 2:05 PM
