A motorist whom police believe was intoxicated attempted to avoid being taken into custody last Saturday night in Sunnyside. After a short police pursuit the man was arrested and booked into the Sunnyside city jail. He's initially been charged with eluding law enforcement officials, DUI and driving a motor vehicle while license suspended third degree. The man's name has not been released by local police. According to Sgt. Kent Coffman of the Sunnyside PD, shortly after 11 p.m. last Saturday a local patrolman clocked a vehicle on radar traveling at a speed of 84 mph in a 50 mph zone on Outlook Road, near Maple Grove Road. Coffman said the patrolman, in a marked police cruiser, activated his lights and siren. Instead of stopping, the motorist sped away southbound on Maple Grove Road, blowing through the stop sign on Yakima Valley Highway. Coffman said the motorist proceeded south on Swan Road, later crashing his 2005 Nissan Senta into a mailbox as the vehicle skidded off Snipes Canal Road. The suspect, said Coffman, did not suffer any injuries as a result of the collision, and was taken into custody.
