Marie E. Johnson, 86 of Sunnyside passed away on Wednesday July 24, 2013. Marie Olson was born in Longview, to Anna and Carl Olson. Marie attended elementary school in Longview, before the Olson family moved to the Sunnyside area. She graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1944. Marie met her best friend and future spouse, Ray Johnson, and they were married in February of 1947 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with Father H.A. Reinhold officiating. Ray and Marie were co-owners of the 410 Market in Sunnyside, with Marie's older sister Della and her husband, Harold Caton. They bought the store in 1952 and retired in 1983 after 31 years of successful business. After retirement Marie and Ray continued to live in the Sunnyside area. Marie enjoyed her family, fishing, dancing and entertaining, bowling and horseback trail riding in the Cascade Mountains. She also enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing and travelling in the family motorhome to their favorite camping and boating spots. Marie loved life and lived it to the fullest. She especially loved her spouse and best friend for 66 plus years, Ray. Marie is survived by her husband of 66 years, Ray; her sisters, Theo Schmidt of Phoenix, Ariz. and Vera Mahre of Sunnyside; her children, Ron (Nancy) of Yakima, Judy (Ethan Reavis) of Spokane Valley and Lori Sander of Yakima; one daughter-in-law, Tracia of Tacoma; nine grandchildren, Michael, Martin and Matthew Johnson, Jeni Wilbanks and Kyle Reavis, Mitchell and Nick Sander and Julia and Vanessa Johnson; and four great-grandchildren. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Anna Olson; one son, James, who died in October of 2009 in an automobile accident; and her siblings, George, Cecelia, Clarence and Della. The family would like to express appreciation to Prestige Care and Rehabilitation for their excellent care, compassion and assistance during Marie's stay there. Viewing and visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m., with recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Prestige Care and Rehabilitation through Smith Funeral Home.
