Bickleton still safe from raging wildfire

BICKLETON - Despite rumors, Bickleton has not yet received an evacuation order from the Klickitat County Sheriff's office due to the Mile Marker 28 fire, although the entire area is on alert. Bickleton is currently a level one evacuation zone, which is simply a warning that an evacuation notice may come in the immediate future. The sheriff's office accidentally announced that Bickleton had been moved to a level two zone last Friday, but quickly retracted the warning. Level two is a potential evacuation, which means people should pack and be prepared to move at a moment's notice. A meeting was held in Bickleton Sunday night to address concerns about the fire and the evacuation levels. As of this morning the town remains a level one zone. The Mile Marker 28 fire started near that milepost on Highway 97 atop Satus Pass between Toppenish and Goldendale on Wednesday, July 24. This morning it was listed as involving more than 20,000 acres and 1,345 firefighting personnel. The fire was 25 percent contained. Highway 97 remains closed and the areas near the fire have been evacuated.
