Homer Eugene "Gene" Fields, 90, a former Sunnyside resident, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2013, at his home in Cashmere. He was born Aug. 17, 1922 in Wheeler, Ark. to James Arthur and Sarah Katie (Allred) Fields. Gene received his early education from Greenland Elementary near Fayetteville, Ark. Gene joined the U.S. Navy on Sept. 12, 1942 and proudly served his country aboard the USS Troilus. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 11, 1945. He married Henrietta Gertrude Maples on June 29, 1946. Shortly after the birth of their only child, they made their home in Sunnyside. It was here in 1956 that Gene started his career with what was known as the Oregon-Washington Telephone Company. He retired after 28 years working as a lineman. Gene was very active in the Assembly of God Church. He is survived by his son, Eddie (Julia) Fields of Cashmere; one grandson, Lorin Fields of Los Angeles, Calif.; one granddaughter, Wendi Fields of Portland, Ore.; and one sister, LaWanda (Jay) Fulfer of Springdale, Ark. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Gertrude; four brothers, Willis, James, Dale and Wayne; two sisters, Irene Russell and Sylvia Neu. Graveside services will be held Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside, followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside.
