Police to crack down on dog owners

MABTON - At Tuesday night's Mabton City Council meeting, city clerk Ret Stewart told council members that of the many residents in town, just nine people have obtained dog licenses.

Police Chief Rick Gutierrez says the city is looking into partnering with the humane society to house stray animals in Yakima, instead of Mabton.

"People break the locks, cut the gates," Gutierrez said of people who try to retrieve their animals without paying fines for letting them run loose in town.

He also said police officers will be going through town more often to make sure pet owners are in compliance with the pet policy in Mabton.
