Grizzly boys blank Ike, Cadet girls return the favor

YAKIMA - Not one Sunnyside boy lost a match this past Tuesday against Eisenhower High School.

The league opener was held on Ike's courts.

In singles play, Sunnyside's Scott Laverman earned the first victory over Ike's Brandon Garza 6-3, 6-1. Grizzly Matthew Gallagher earned the win over Martin Martinez of Ike by scores of 6-1 and 6-4. Another Grizzly win was notched by Michael Gallager against Eisenhower's Ian Leaverton, 6-2, 6-1. Also, Alexis Osuna turned out a victory against Cadet Mathew Tuckners 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles action Tuesday the Sunnyside duo of Jacob Martin and David Lopez went up against the Cadet duo of Skyler Anders and Carlos Galindo, scoring a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. Nathan Laverman and Zach Halma powered the Grizzlies to 6-0, 6-2 wins over Ike's Jaiden Marquis and Tre Peterson. And, Sunnyside's Felix Garcia and Isaiah Lycenski scored a 6-4, 6-0 win over Ike's Julian Contrearas and Vicente Velasco.

"All the boys matches were played with focus on good returns and keeping the ball in play," Sunnyside Coach David Downing said. "The boys did great."

The tables were turned on Sunnyside in girls play, as the Lady Grizzlies fell in all seven matches.

In singles action on Tuesday afternoon, Sunnyside's Elexis Lepe lost to Lady Cadet Claire Bohoskey 6-0, 6-1. Lady Grizzly Cheyenne Schultz was blanked 6-0, 6-0 by Lizzy Glenski. Sunnyside's Itsel Lopez also dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Hannah Taylor.

In doubles action on the court Tuesday, Sunnyside's Lydia Robert and Ashley Foster put up a strong fight against Madonna Nguyen and Lexie Bailer of Ike, but fell short by scores of 6-4, 7-5.

The Lady Grizzly duo of Jazmine Lopez and Roxy Plancarte also lost to an Ike team, Bailee Griffin and Carly Forbes, 6-2, 6-2. In the one other girls doubles match, Sunnyside's Carla Rodriguez and Jessica Garnica succumbed to Ike's Kaley Gruenwald and Jesi Nicholson 6-1, 6-1.

"The girls team gained valuable experience in their match," Downing added. "I am very proud of their sportsmanship and their effort."

The Sunnyside tennis squad next hosts Chiawana at home this Saturday, March 23.
