HERMISTON, ORE. - As much as a three-club difference thanks to gusting winds kept the scores relatively high at the Hermiston Golf Invitational yesterday.
But despite the less than ideal playing conditions, the Sunnyside High boys golf team kept all four of its individual rounds under 100 - the first time this season the Grizzlies have accomplished that feat.
Sunnyside tallied a team score of 381, earning the Grizzlies a sixth-place showing from the nine-team field. The host school, Hermiston, captured top honors with an invite-low total of 340 strokes.
Medalist honors Thursday went to Pendleton's Walker Hoolehan. He carded an impressive 5-over-par 75 at Hermiston's Big River Golf Course. Playing the black tee blocks yesterday, the prep linksters had 6,130 yards of semi-rough terrain to navigate.
Sunnyside's Chandler Luther and relative newcomer Brandon Daley paved the way for the Grizzlies' sixth-place finish. The two Grizzlies finished within one stroke of each other. Luther tallied a 45 on the par-34 front side, absorbing a 47 on the par-36 back nine. One shot back at 93 was Daley on front and back nine scores of 44-49.
The Grizzlies also got rounds of 97 and 99 from Ian Heffron (44-53) and Nathan Meyer (46-53), respectively.
SHS Coach Gary Rohde appeared satisfied with his club's performance yesterday, especially when he took note that the Grizzlies finished just seven strokes back of the two teams that tied for fourth and fifth place...The Dalles and LaGrande.
Rohde also had three Lady Grizzly golfers competing in the girls division at Hermiston yesterday. A fourth was needed, though, to make up a team score.
The low girls round by a Sunnyside golfer was a 121 (60-61), carded by Ashley Davis. Her two teammates, Alyson Spidle and Jacquie Kranz, posted rounds of 140 and 173, respectively.
