School board president stepping down because of change in residential address

Sunnyside School Board President Miguel Puente will be moving outside the boundary for his position on the school board.

At the most recent school board meeting, Feb. 28, he announced the impending move, stating he would serve through November.

Puente has served on the school board since 1992, with a brief vacancy during 2011 when he resigned but was reappointed to the position.

That resignation removed him from the board during a time when his wife was being considered for employment.

Puente was already running for reelection and there was just one application for his position when it was vacated. So, the school board reappointed him after the decision to hire his wife as a teacher in the school district was approved.

His current term on the school board will not expire this year. As a result, said Yakima County Elections Department official Emily Beebe, the rest of the Sunnyside School Board of Directors will need to appoint someone to fill the vacancy for district 5.

That individual, she said, will serve the remainder of Puente's term and has the option of running for election in 2015.

Puente said he will still live within Sunnyside School District boundaries, but his new residence will be within the boundaries served by Sandra Linde.

Her seat will be on the ballot in 2015.

"I don't have any plans to run for election to that seat," said Puente.

He said he is proud to have served on the school board, helping students in Sunnyside receive a quality education.

However, Puente believes the district is in capable hands.

For now, he will continue to serve on the school board, helping to make the decisions he believes are best for the continued prosperity of the schools.
