MHS principal stepping down

MABTON - The Mabton School District today is looking for a new high school principal.

Last night, Monday, the Mabton School Board accepted Jose Elizondo's resignation letter from his post as principal for Mabton Junior/Senior High School. The resignation is effective at the end of the current school year.

The Granger native came to the district in July 2011 from Pasco, where he served as assistant principal at Ochoa Middle School.

"We appreciate the time he has been with us," said School Board Chair Elsa Sanchez. "He has made a positive impact here."

Superintendent Minerva Morales said Elizondo turned in his resignation because he would like to be closer to his family in the Tri-Cities.

Elizondo did not attend last night's school board meeting and could not be reached for comment this morning.

Morales said the district will open the principal post up for applicants right away in hopes of making a hire by the end of this school year. "There are some good candidates out there," she said.

MHS Vice Principal Sue Sartain said she intends to apply for the school's top job.
