In a 15-minute meeting before last night's regular meeting, the Sunnyside City Council decided to appoint Dean Broersma to Position 2 on the council, filling the seat vacated by former Mayor Mike Farmer.
Within the first 10 minutes of the regular session, Broersma joined the other council members in appointing Francisco Guerrero to fill Position 4, vacated by Councilman Nick Paulakis last month.
The two new councilmen were immediately thrown into the deep end with a full agenda in a meeting lasting three hours.
The council voted on 10 items, including moving forward with the downtown revitalization project, two rezoning requests and an agreement with Colin Baenziger & Associates to recruit a new city manager.
Before the end of the meeting both new councilmen were also appointed to council subcommittees. Both will serve on the Finance and Administrative Services Committee and Broersma will also serve on the Public Works Committee.
In addition to the new council members, new Interim City Manager John Darrington attended his first regular council meeting.
He also introduced an interim finance director, David Layden, who had worked with Darrington in Gillette, Wyo. Layden served as the finance director in Gillette for nearly 25 years, then served in the same position in University Place, Wash., for nearly seven years before retiring.
