Salmeron, Pena SHS leaders at four-team meet at Hanford

RICHLAND - Together, senior Eduardo Salmeron and junior Elijah Pena returned to Sunnyside yesterday from a four-school, non-scoring track and field meet at Hanford High School with five first-place finishes and a runner-up showing. Prosser and River View were the two other schools competing.

The Grizzly duo teamed with Bernaldo Madrigal and Ryan White to easily run away with the win in the boys 4x100 relay. The SHS quartet sped to a clocking of 46.07 seconds. A squad from the host Falcons finished a distant second in a time of 47.58 seconds.

The senior Salmeron also showed his mettle in the jumping events Wednesday, winning two of them and placing second in the other. The pair of victories came in the high jump and triple jump. Salmeron's 5-8 leap in the high jump was two inches higher than that of runner-up Emmitt Kison of Hanford. Salmeron was never really challenged for the top spot in the triple jump, as he set a mark of 40 feet, 4 inches. The next best triple jump belonged to Prosser senior Caleb Aaberg (37-10). In the long jump, Salmeron's effort of 19-3 was six inches further than the third-place finishing Aaberg, but 10 inches behind the winning jump of Hanford's Ryan Young (20-1).

The junior Pena, besides being a member of the winning 4x100 relay squad, got the SHS boys team victories in both hurdles races. In the shorter of the two, the 110-meter sprint, he edged teammate Eric Amaro, the runner-up, by approximately seven-tenths of a second with a winning clocking of 16.07 seconds. In the 300-meter hurdles, Pena received a stiff challenge from second-place finishing Zach Martin of Hanford. Pena prevailed, though, hitting the tape in 43.64 seconds compared to the 43.75 clocking of Martin.

The one other first-place finish the Sunnyside boys secured yesterday was nailed down by the senior Amaro. He bested a 56-athlete field in the javelin, throwing the spear a distance of 165 feet, 3 inches. The second-best throw on the day was recorded by Hanford's Brian Baciu (160-0).
