Jacoba de Vos (Benjert), 92, of Chilliwack, B.C., Canada, and a longtime Sunnyside resident, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013, at the Waverly in Chilliwack, B.C., Canada. After a short illness, our mother, oma, great-oma was taken from us, who loved her dearly.
She was born Jan. 16, 1921 to Jan and Heiltje Benjert joining her brother, Hubert and sister, Hendrika. She also had a sister, Leana, who passed away at the age of nine months.
Her mother (Heiltje) passed away in 1945, her sister (Hendrika) in 1956, her father (Jan) 1967, her brother (Hubert) in 1992, and her son-in-law (Adriaan den Hoed) in 2008.
She was born in the Netherlands, where she married her sweetheart, Gerrit de Vos. After 10 years of marriage they immigrated to the U.S. and finally ended up settling in Sunnyside. Along with dad and mom came their two children, Arie and Helen. While in America, two more children were born, Frances Hendrika and Henrietta Leana. Just three-and-one-half years after moving to America, her beloved husband passed away leaving her alone in a strange country with four children. Her two older children helped her in whatever way they could. She later worked at Yakima Bait for many years. In 1987 she decided to retire.
She moved to Chilliwack, B.C., Canada, and bought a condominium at the Sunset Manor. She had many friends there who were Dutch and lived next door to the Bethel Church. As time went by she needed a little extra help which prompted a move to the Waverly. Here she resided for some time until her last days.
Jacoba de Vos is survived by her son, Arie (Lydia) de Vos; daughters, Helen den Hoed, Frances (Sander) de Jong and Henrietta (John) Van Woerden; many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She will be missed greatly by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
