The Sunnyside School District's transportation budget was extended by $100,000 last night after the school board heard about a savings opportunity.
Executive Director of Finance and Operations Jeff Loe told the board members that the company from which the district purchases its buses called him, providing the Sunnyside School District a chance to save $20,000 on the purchase of a new bus.
He said he hadn't budgeted for the purchase, but the school district has the revenues available in its transportation fund.
The bus, said Loe, was ordered by another school district that did not take possession of the vehicle.
"I believe the savings is worthwhile," he told the school board.
Loe said to make the purchase, an adjustment to the transportation fund's expenditures was necessary and needed school board approval.
Believing he should have planned for a contingency like this, he apologized. "This was a result of poor planning," said Loe.
The school board members stated they were pleased to have the opportunity to purchase a new bus at a savings and approved the amendment to the budget, allowing the expenditure.
The bus will be purchased for approximately $110,000 from Schetky Northwest Sales of Portland, Ore.
