Mild May in store for Sunnyside

Above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation are forecast for the Sunnyside area for the month of May.

That's according to the National Weather Service, which notes normal highs for Sunnyside rise from 71 degrees at the start of May to 79 degrees at the end of May.

Normal overnight lows rise from 42 degrees to 51 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 0.61 inches.

Warmer temperatures would be a welcome break for the area, as last month Sunnyside experienced average temperatures nearly four degrees cooler than normal for April.

The average temperature last month was 49 degrees. High temperatures in April averaged 64.1 degrees, 2.8 degrees cooler than normal.

The mercury hit its peak last month at 81 degrees on April 27. Low temperatures last month averaged 34 degrees, nearly five degrees below normal.

April's coldest temperature was 20 degrees on the 17th.

Precipitation totaled 0.27 inches during April, which was 0.32 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation -at least .01 inch - was received on four days with the heaviest, 0.21 inches reported on the April 7.

Precipitation year-to-date has reached 1 inch, which is 1.72 inches below normal.

Since October 2012, the water year precipitation at Sunnyside has been 5.77 inches, which is 0.24 inches above normal.
