Greyhounds show off speed at league meet

YAKIMA - Greyhound athletes took first-place honors in four events at the three-team CWAC league meet held Thursday at Chuck Millard Track at West Valley.

Grandview's Jose Castilleja showed off his speed in the 100m and 200m races, taking first-place honors in both events by finishing with clockings of 11.58 and 23.66 seconds, respectively. Teammate Josiah Saenz finished right behind him, earning third-place honors in the 100m with a time of 11.85 and second-place honors in the 200m, crossing the line in 23.71.

The Greyhounds also did well in the 800m race with Grandview's Alex Soberanes finishing second with a clocking of 2:17.34, and teammate Diego Delgadillo just behind him with a time of 2:18.40. Winning that race was Tucker Andis of West Valley, who clocked 2:15.27.

Greyhound Dameon Garza had the second-best performance in the long jump, leaping a distance of 17-9.5. Grandview's Armondo Ambriz took third-place honors in the event with a jump of 17-4.5. The top jumper was Amjed Horieh of West Valley, who completed a jump of 19-4.

Steven Razo of Grandview completed the 300m hurdles in 42.55, hot on the heels of top finisher Braden Sunwold of West Valley (42.48).

Greyhound Jose Valazquez also earned a 'Top 3' finish for Grandview in the 3200m race, clocking 11:54.12. The top finisher was West Valley's Justin Irvine (10:34.99).

The Lady Greyhounds also took two top finishes. Grandview's Kasi Prieto clocked 1:01.54 in the 400m race, beating the rest of the field by more than four seconds.

Prieto also took third-place honors in the 100m race, crossing the line in 13.23. The first-place finisher was West Valley's Tierney Silliman (12.75).

The Lady Greyhounds also earned a first-place finish in the 4x400 relay, where Prieto was joined by teammates Kaysie Kollmar, Jamila Shafer and Marizza Birrueta to finish in 4:29.72.

Birrueta also notched second-place honors in the 800m race with a time of 2:40.11. She was less than a second behind top finisher Camille Ridd of West Valley (2:39.43).

Rounding out her meet, Birrueta took third-place honors in the 1600m with a clocking of 5:59.11. West Valley's Kaili Keefe had a clocking of 5:55.57 to take first-place honors in the event.

Shafer also notched a second-place finish in the discus with a throw of 98-5. West Valley's Megan Atkinson threw the plate 99-1.

The Lady Greyhounds also tallied a 'Top 3' finish in the high jump. Grandview's Miranda Ebbelaar leapt 4-2 for third-place honors. West Valley's Aryssa Brantner took first-place honors with a jump of 4-6.

The final tally had Toppenish boys over Grandview boys 80-59, West Valley boys over Grandview boys 102-39, Toppenish girls over Grandview girls 84-51 and West Valley girls over the Lady Greyhounds 125-21.

Grandview athletes will next compete at the District Championships at Art Fiker Stadium in Prosser on Friday, May 17.
