Thursday a.m. collision sends Mabton man to local hospital

A two-vehicle collision near Sunnyside yesterday morning resulted in a Mabton man requiring hospitalization.

Washington State Patrol troopers report that Stefanie E. Riggin, 37, of Ellensburg, the driver of a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up, was stopped at the off ramp on I-82 about one mile south of Sunnyside at about 8 a.m. Thursday. WSP officials said she failed to yield to an oncoming 2004 Dodge Stratus driven by 37-year-old Rosendo Aparicio of Mabton, northbound on SR-241. The two vehicles collided.

The cause of the accident, according to the WSP, was the Ellensburg woman failing to yield the right-of-way. Troopers say charges are pending.

Aparicio was transported to Sunnyside Community Hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. His sedan was totaled.

Riggin's pick-up truck sustained minor damage. It was able to be driven from the scene of the accident. WSP troopers said Riggin avoided injury.
