Relay for Life nets $70,000-plus for cancer research

The Relay starts with the survivors lap. This year caregivers were invited to participate in the opening lap, as well.

GRANDVIEW - A brisk wind and a late start handicapped Relay for Life at Grandview's Rich Leenhouts Stadium last Saturday, but the event still managed to raise more than $70,600 for the American Cancer Society.

The event started four hours later than planned due to a Grandview High School soccer play-off game that could not be rescheduled. After the noon game was over, the Relay for Life teams set up around the field in record time for a 4 p.m. start.

The stadium was crowded with relayers. The event had 33 teams and 371 registered walkers. The goal was $75,000.
