Man charged in local cell phone store burglaries

Gustavo Acevedo Magana, 39, has been charged with a count of second degree burglary and a count of first degree theft after police say he broke into Sunnyside cell phone stores six times over the past two months.

According to police, Magana stole nearly $34,000 worth of cell phones and other equipment from the stores.

The break-ins happened at Boost Mobile on Yakima Valley Highway on March 17 and April 25, AT&T on East Lincoln Avenue May 2 and 4, Montelongo Computer Solutions on Yakima Valley Highway on March 23 and Verizon Wireless on Yakima Valley Highway on May 5.

Boost Mobile, AT&T and Montelongo Computer Solutions all had video of the break-ins and a witness reported seeing a suspect fleeing the Verizon Wireless store after an audible alarm sounded.

Sunnyside police arrested Magana the morning of May 16 on outstanding warrants. According to police, Magana had a stolen cellular phone from the Boost Mobile break-in on his person when he was arrested. Police said Magana admitted to four of the break-ins, but denied taking anything from one location and denied the other two break-ins.

Magana is being held at the Yakima County Jail on $200,000 bail. He is due to be arraigned on Monday, June 3.
