The Sunnyside City Council discussed the police department’s crime analyst position at Tuesday night’s meeting, with Deputy Police Chief Phil Schenck requesting the position’s salary be adjusted to match the level of administrative assistant instead of the current salary level, which is closer to that of a receptionist.
The issue was brought up by Deputy Mayor Don Vlieger in his role as chair of the public safety committee. The committee was split on what to do, with Councilwoman Theresa Hancock suggesting bringing in a contracted administrative assistant to help Schenck with paperwork until the new city manager is hired and can make personnel decisions.
Schenck noted that he is not asking for a new position, only to adjust the existing salary to be more in line with surrounding cities and the job description itself. He said because the position has been unfilled for the past two months, the police department’s budget can cover the difference.
The council did not take action on the issue.
