YAKIMA – If not for a catastrophic third game the Grandview Lady Greyhounds may have been able to advance to the postseason last night in a loser-out playoff loss against East Valley.
Instead, the Lady Greyhounds ended the season with a 3-1 loss.
After the Red Devils won game one Tuesday night by a score of 25-19, Grandview rallied for a 25-21 game two victory to tie the match.
But that’s where the match turned against the Lady Greyhounds as East Valley rolled to a 25-9 victory in game three to take a 2-1 lead.
“We lost focus and were making tons of simple mistakes,” says Grandview Coach Beckie Ramirez. “We quit communicating and doing the things we do well.”
At the same time, the coach said she and her team had to put the disappointment behind them to battle in game four. “I told them we didn’t have time to dwell on things we should have done.”
The result was a renewed effort by the Lady Greyhounds. With East Valley at match point, up 24-20, Grandview fired back before eventually falling 27-25. “We pushed back and worked hard in that last game, East Valley had to work to earn every point,” Ramirez said.
The loss ended the match and Grandview’s season with an overall record of 8-7.
Ramirez says her team will hopefully have opportunities this off-season and summer to improve, as there are only three seniors on the 2013 squad.
“They brought a lot of positive energy and bought into my philosophy,” she said of Taylor Hall, Breanna Lopez and Taylor Hamm who all played their last match for Grandview volleyball. “All three were a great support system for everything we did.”
