Senior Johanna Chumley’s opening 201 game was the spark that ignited the Sunnyside High School girls bowling team to its first victory of the season.
Hosting Big Nine League foe Davis, the SHS Lady Grizzlies defeated the Pirates, 3-1, Thursday afternoon.
Sunnyside dropped a 3-1 decision to the Eisenhower Cadets earlier this week to fall to 0-3 on the year, but yesterday the Lady Grizzlies fended off visiting Davis to chalk up a win.
Sunnyside, thanks to Chumley’s 201, handily bested the Pirates in the opening game, 619-546. The next highest individual score for Sunnyside was Elisha Noyola’s 119, but with three of the Davis bowlers failing to reach a score of 100, the Lady Grizzlies enjoyed a 74-pin margin of victory.
The host Lady Grizzlies forged a 2-0 lead on Davis yesterday by eking out a 631-621 win in game two. Carla Rodriguez, Chumley and Brianna Esqueda had the top individual efforts for Sunnyside in that contest on efforts of 147, 140 and 136, respectively. Davis got a team-high 144 from senior Jelissa Iman in game two.
The Pirates kept things interesting by winning the first of the two Baker games, 130-129, to draw to within 2-1 of Sunnyside. The Lady Grizzlies prevailed in the second Baker game match-up, though, by a score of 147-123 to earn the 3-1 victory over the Pirates.
