BICKLETON – The Lady Pirates battled valiantly against the visiting Lyle Cougars last night, but lost in four hard-fought sets.

It was the first loss in regulation-length matches for the Bickleton High girls volleyball team this season.

Bickleton fought for every point. In the first set the Lady Pirates lost by a respectable 25-19 margin. They challenged the Cougars even more in the next set, losing 25-20.

The tide turned in the third set and Bickleton managed to fight its way to a 25-20 victory.

Unfortunately for the Lady Pirates, the Cougars managed to outfight them in the fourth and final set, winning 25-20.

“It was an interesting game,” said Bickleton Coach Katie Leuthauser. “Our biggest problem was that we beat ourselves up on serve-receive. But other than that the girls did play well.”

Shaylee Tharp was 26-for-27 from the service line with 11 aces for the Lady Pirates. Teammate Sydnie Obanion went 15-for-15 serving.

Bickleton’s Lindsay Brown gave a 15-for-17 performance serving and contributed seven kills at the net.

Lady Pirate Daniela Smith was 7-for-9 from the line with three aces and two assists.

“They had a great team attitude which is the most important thing to me,” Leuthauser said of her Lady Pirates. “I look forward to seeing Lyle again.”

Bickleton (2-1) next travels to Klickitat to take on the Vandals on Friday, Oct. 4.
