Mabton Vikings post shutout against Warriors

WAHLUKE – When the Mabton girls soccer team returned to their home campus last night, it was able to ring the victory bell.

That’s because the Lady Vikes blanked Wahluke, 5-0.

The first goal on the Warriors’ home pitch came in the 20th minute. Mabton’s Micki Williams scored from outside the 18-yard mark off an assist from Maricela Chavez.

Wahluke was able to hold off the Lady Viking attack through the remainder of the opening half, but 10 minutes into the second half Williams drove the ball past the defenders to deliver a pass to teammate Nicole Mireles, who capitalized on the scoring opportunity.

In the 68th minute, Williams showed her fearlessness again. She delivered the ball into the back of the net from approximately 30 feet from the goal.

Lady Viking Cristina Gonzalez was provided a free kick opportunity with just five minutes remaining before the final whistle. She capitalized on the scoring opportunity to give Mabton a 4-0 score.

In the waning seconds of the match, Lady Viking Maricela Chavez put in the final goal. She slid in front of Wahluke keeper Sujeily Ruiz and got her foot on the ball to boot it between the crossbars, ending the match with a 5-0 score.

Mabton Coach Elizabeth Garcia said the Lady Vikes initially struggled on the attack, making adjustments to the line-up.

She decided to move Williams to the center midfield from a forward position since Chavez was returning to the pitch after nursing an ankle injury suffered earlier in the season.

“We weren’t attacking as much in the first half….when I saw we had only taken two shots in the first half, I moved technical defensive player Esperanza Leon to help Micki in the center,” said Garcia, stating that decision made a difference.

Mabton had 13 shots on goal and Wahluke’s Ruiz stopped the ball five times.

Lady Viking keeper Cristina Gonzalez recorded one save, denying the Warriors their only chance at scoring.

“I’m always proud of the hustle my girls put out against any team and they showed me how hungry they were for the win after losing in the PK’s (shootouts) the last two games,” said Garcia.

Mabton (1-2, 2-4) was scheduled to play Granger tomorrow, but due to a lack of numbers is planning to reschedule the match.
