WHITE SWAN – Each and every stop counts when a football team takes to the gridiron. In the end, the Vikings didn’t make enough of them.
This past Friday, Mabton was holding its own against White Swan. The teams were tied 6-6 at the end of the opening quarter.
White Swan scored a couple of touchdowns in the second quarter, but the Viking defense was able to hold the Cougars, denying another scoring opportunity in the third stanza.
However, White Swan was seemingly out for blood, breaking through the tackles and getting into the end zone three more times to win 40-14.
It was also in the fourth quarter that Mabton was able to score another TD. That just wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
The Vikings tallied 175 rushing yards, 148 of them came from the 15 carries by Roy Zavala.
Emiliano Rodriguez of Mabton scored a touchdown on a 10-yard pass into the end zone from quarterback Nico Pina.
Pina was 3-for-12 on passing for 39 yards.
“They (White Swan) ran the ball on us and made some good passes,” Mabton Coach Trevor Curtis said of last Friday’s game.
“We just needed to make some tackles.”
This coming Friday the Vikings (1-4) will take on Tri-City Prep in Pasco.
