Mabton blanked by Cougars, 1-0

Girls Prep Soccer

WARDEN – The Mabton girls soccer team last night had five golden scoring opportunities, but couldn’t capitalize against Warden.

All it took was one good shot from Savannah Edson of the Cougars to secure the win.

The two teams were in a scoreless deadlock until there were just five minutes left in regulation. That’s when Edson took advantage of a penalty kick and scored the lone goal of the match, giving Warden a 1-0 win.

The Lady Viking defensive players had been able to hold off the Cougar attack until that moment.

Mabton keeper Cristina Gonzalez recorded four saves, keeping Warden from getting the ball between the crossbars, but was unable to stop the free kick.

The Cougars had five total shots on goal.

Mabton Coach Elizabeth Garcia said the Lady Vikings battled valiantly, but the ball just wouldn’t go in the net.

Warden keeper Deianeira Caudle denied the Lady Vikes on each of the five attempts to score.

Mabton (1-3, 2-5) will tonight (Tuesday) host Connell.
