EAST WENATCHEE – Sunnyside High School’s swim team managed just one first-place finish, from 12 events staged, at a Big Nine League meet yesterday against the Eastmont Wildcats.
The lone victory for the Lady Grizzly swimmers came from Cassadie Moore.
Competing in the 100-yard breaststroke, Moore clipped Eastmont’s fastest swimmer by more than four seconds. The SHS athlete clocked a time of 1:15.65. Placing second in the 100-breast was the Wildcats’ Adrian Marquis (1:19.92).
Marquis turned the tables on Moore in the 100-yard freestyle. The ‘Cat clocked a first-place time of 1:00.28. Moore was second in a time of 1:03.38. Sunnyside teammate Summer Hazzard finished on Moore’s heels, placing third with a clocking of 1:05.29, which bested the times of Eastmont’s two other swimmers in that event.
Hazzard also managed a third-place showing in the 200-free (2:26.27). Sunnyside’s Lindsay Schilperoort was second with a clocking of 2:20.89, while Bettye Eifert of Eastmont came away with the win (2:09.84).
Schilperoort claimed her second runner-up finish on the day in the 100-yard butterfly. She finished in 1:12.66, approximately two seconds behind the winner, Gabrielle Davy of Eastmont.
Also securing second-place finishes for Sunnyside Thursday afternoon were Payton Sample and Kalie Bestebreur. Sample, in the 50-yard freestyle, sped to a clocking of 30.05 seconds. The winning time was 25.95, set by Eastmont’s Kelly Hartman. Bestebreur had the second-best time in the 100-yard backstroke (1:16.93). Eastmont’s Eifert won the race (1:12.74).
In the three relay competitions staged yesterday, Sunnyside’s swimmers were DQ’d in two of them. In the other, the 400-yard freestyle, the Lady Grizzly foursome of Sample, Hazzard, Schilperoort and Moore clocked a time of 4:21.82. Eastmont’s quartet of swimmers posted a time of 3:47.90.
Score-wise, Eastmont best-
ed the Lady Grizzlies 124-40.
