MABTON – Last month Royal defeated Mabton in a shootout, 1-0.
The Lady Vikings were looking to avenge the earlier loss last night at home, and were successful in winning 3-0. The victory also snapped a three-match losing streak.
Mabton dominated the pitch Tuesday evening, attacking the goal 15 times.
Royal had just seven shots on goal, by comparison.
It was in the 49th minute that the Lady Vikings were first successful and capitalized on a scoring opportunity. Micki Williams got the ball into the back of the net off a free kick from the right side of the 18-yard line.
The Knights on a miscue scored on their own goal, giving Mabton a second goal in the 61st minute of the match. The Lady Vikes had a free kick opportunity, the ball was deflected by Royal keeper Marissa Gomez, but a Royal teammate ran into the ball and it soared inadvertently between the crossbars.
The final goal was made with just six minutes left in the game. Maricela Chavez of Mabton eyed the back of the net when Diana Leon delivered a pass. Chavez took advantage of the angle and booted the ball to her target.
“It was a physical game and both teams played well,” said Mabton Coach Elizabeth Garcia.
She said she was pleased with the Lady Vikings, who went on the attack after changes in the line-up.
“We were able to execute our plays in the second half…help from Diana (Leon) and communication with the midfielders and forwards enabled the attack,” said Garcia.
She said the Lady Vikings showed a hunger for the win.
Mabton (2-5, 3-7) will return to the pitch against Ki-Be in Benton City tomorrow (Thursday).
