Pirates suffer home loss

BICKLETON – A strong start wasn’t enough to keep the Lady Pirates from absorbing another Greater Columbia Gorge League loss last night as the squad faced off against Klickitat.

“It was a good game to start,” said Bickleton Coach Katie Leuthauser. “They started out really strong but tapered out in the middle.”

The Vandals won the first set by a close score of 25-20. But the Lady Pirates lost their steam in the second set and lost 25-13.

“It was a completely different game in the second set,” said Leuthauser. “The girls picked it up in the third game, but it wasn’t enough.”

Bickleton lost the final set 25-16 to fall to 3-5 in conference play.

Leuthauser praised her players, noting that two Lady Pirates, Sydnie O’Banion and Shaylee Tharp, were 10-for-10 serving. Lindsay Brown was 12-for-15 from the service line, providing a solid base for the team to work from.

Brown also tallied four kills in the losing effort. O’Banion added another three kills and Tharp contributed two more kills and four assists.

“The last two matches have been going much better,” said Leuthauser. “Thursday’s game is a deciding factor on whether we are going to district, so we hope to do well in the match.”

The Lady Pirates will be hosting Lyle on Thursday.
