CONNELL – The visiting Mabton High School soccer team last Friday was unable to come up with a win over Connell.
The Eagles (8-2) drew first blood on their way to a 5-2 win, in the 14th minute when the ball ricocheted away from the Mabton keeper and Connell’s Cassandra Riner booted it into the back of the net.
Just five minutes later the Eagles went back for more. A corner kick “ping-ponged” around inside the 18-yard line and Connell’s Brittany Vickerman got a foot on the ball to deliver it between the crossbars.
Jacqueline Ramos Magana of the Eagles got in on the scoring action at the 23-minute mark. She scored on a free kick opportunity.
“We switched out goalies after the third goal,” said Mabton Coach Elizabeth Garcia, stating the move turned out positive as Cristina Gonzalez moved into action.
Gonzalez had been the keeper until that point. On offense she was able to secure a goal for Mabton off a cross from Micki Williams at the 35th minute.
Connell, in the second half, scored two more goals before Williams hit paydirt with just 10 minutes left in the match. Gonzalez took a shot at the goal and Eagles keeper Gloria Gomez dropped the ball after blocking the shot. Williams applied pressure and delivered the ball into the back of the net.
Gomez recorded seven saves, while Mabton keepers Cristina Gonzalez and Ana Flores combined for 13 saves.
“It was a tough game for us. We are trying to get past a common trend of having a rough first half,” said Garcia.
She said Flores was inexperienced as a keeper, but “…she stepped it up and played amazing.”
Mabton (3-6, 4-9) tonight (Monday) will host Wahluke for the final match of the regular season.
