Local hospital earns patient safety award

SEATTLE - Sunnyside Community Hospital and Clinics was recently recognized for outstanding efforts to reduce patient harm and improve patient safety during the 81st annual meeting of the Washington State Hospital Association in Seattle.

Sunnyside Community Hospital and Clinics earned the 2013 “Washington State Hospital Association Safe Care in Action” award for efforts to decrease patient harm in 10 key areas through their participation in the Partnership for Patients national initiative – a nationwide collaborative effort to reduce the number of hospital-acquired conditions by 40 percent and hospital readmissions by 20 percent by the end of 2013.

“The board of directors, medical staff and our hospital staff members take patient safety seriously, and we are glad to have our efforts recognized by our peers,” said Sunnyside Community Hospital & Clinics Chief Executive Officer, John Gallagher.

“This collaborative effort has allowed us to establish best practices in our hospital so that each patient’s safe care is ingrained into everyday practice.  This is great news for our community and the patients we are here to serve.”

The national initiative focuses on reducing harm and improving care in 10 key areas:

1) Adverse drug events

2) Catheter-associated urinary tract infections

3) Central line-associated blood stream infections

4) Injuries from falls and immobility

5) Obstetrical adverse events

6) Pressure ulcers

7) Surgical site infections

8) Venous thromboembolism

9) Ventilator-associated pneumonia

10) Preventable readmissions

The “Safe Care in Action” award was presented to hospitals that achieved a 40 percent reduction in harm or were in the top 10 percentile for six or more measures or for 80 percent of eligible measures.

Sunnyside Community Hospital & Clinics is one of only 16 Washington state hospitals to receive this award.
