Carjacking suspect’s bail set at $2 million

YAKIMA – Richard Eugene Yallup Jr. of Toppenish last week was arrested by Sunnyside police after allegedly carjacking a vehicle, leading officers on a high-speed pursuit, shooting at officers and holding a Granger family hostage.

A Yakima County Superior Court judge this past Monday set the 27-year-old’s bail at $2 million after Yallup was told he faces a multitude of charges.

Yallup, who has nine felony convictions, is being charged with two counts of kidnapping, robbery first degree, theft in the first, second and third degrees, eluding police and illegal possession of a firearm. Yakima County Prosecutor Jim Hagarty said the prosecutor’s office is reviewing the charges and will be filing amended information with the courts.

Yallup last Wednesday allegedly stole a vehicle from a man in the Parkland homes area of Sunnyside at gunpoint.

Police reported spotting the vehicle and pursued it through neighborhoods at speeds that exceeded 100 miles per hour.

The vehicle continued to lead officers in Sunnyside on a chase that ended in Granger when the driver, who has been identified as Yallup, crashed in the area of Cherry Hill near Granger.

Police said Yallup turned and fired a shotgun at an officer, who returned fire. Neither was struck, but Yallup allegedly made a forced entry into a home, firing the shotgun into the door.

A woman was struck by the blast and injured. Police said Yallup entered the home, taking the woman and her family hostage. The family overpowered the suspect while negotiators were attempting to make contact with him.

Yallup awaits an arraignment hearing, which is slated for Friday, Nov. 8. He is being held at the Yakima County Jail on $2 million bond.
