YAKIMA – Davis tallied a goal in the first 15 minutes of play and never looked back in a 3-1 victory over the Sunnyside Lady Grizzly soccer team last night, Tuesday.
“We started slowly and couldn’t get back in the game,” said Sunnyside Coach Sylvia Villagrana.
The lone Lady Grizzly goal of the night gave the visitors some momentary hope, as in the 37th minute Susana Arreola knotted the score with a goal from 18 yards out. She was assisted by teammate Karina Perez.
The score was tied 1-1 at the half, but the host Pirates took charge over the final 40 minutes with scores in the 43rd and 64th minutes to pull away.
The loss dropped Sunnyside’s league record to 0-2 and the Lady Grizzlies’ overall season record now stands at 2-2.
Villagrana says her team worked on improving their communication on the pitch, but injuries to six of her players hampered the effort.
Even so, she says the Lady Grizzlies had opportunities to change last night’s outcome.
“We had our chances but couldn’t complete them, we were always off by one touch,” the coach said.
Sunnyside keeper Maria Ortiz was busy with six saves. For the match, Sunnyside had eight shots on goal while Davis recorded 12.
