GRANGER – The Mabton Lady Vikes soccer team got a boost to its confidence, having secured a non-league 3-1 victory over the Granger Spartans last night.
This was the first win of Mabton’s 2013 campaign after opening the season with back-to-back losses.
“We played with a lot of heart and determination,” said Lady Viking Coach Elizabeth Garcia.
Mabton’s Nicole Mireles was on top of her game, putting the ball away two times against the host team. She scored at the 10-minute mark and again in the 25th minute of the match.
Cynthia Cuevas was the lone Spartan to slip the ball past Mabton’s keepers. She scored a goal with just five minutes left in the opening half of the match.
The Lady Vikings had a 2-1 lead at intermission and the two teams battled for 30 minutes in the second half before another goal was made.
That’s when Maricela Chavez of Mabton scored the final insurance goal to secure the win.
“The Lady Vikes fought for every 50/50 ball and were able to take advantage of every opportunity,” said Garcia, stating she is pleased with the effort of the Mabton players.
Mabton dominated the match, having 15 scoring opportunities. Granger keeper Bertha Fernandez was hard at work and successfully blocked 12 of those shots.
The Spartans aimed for the goal nine times and Cristina Gonzalez of Mabton successfully shut them out eight times.
The Lady Vikings (2-1) have one more non-league match before opening league play. Mabton will tomorrow (Saturday) host Goldendale and next Thursday travel to Royal.
