Sunnyside Lady Grizzlies competitive against ’Cats

YAKIMA - Proving they were at home in Yakima’s Lions Pool Thursday afternoon, the Sunnyside High School girls freestyle relay squad took first place honors in the 200-yard event in action against the Eastmont team.

Relay swimmers Cassadie Moore, Summer Hazzard, Kalie Bestebreur and Payton Sample clocked a time of 1:56.85 against their Eastmont opponents, who finished with a time of 2:24.58.

Moore claimed an individual time of 1:12.22 for first place honors in the 100- yard breaststroke and brought away first place honors in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:25.30

Also in the individual events, Schilperoort tagged the wall for a first place finish time of 1:14 in the 100-yard backstroke.

The relay team of Lindsay Schilperoort, Moore, Hazzard and Sample collected a time of 2:08.57, which was good for second place honors in the 200-yard medley relay against Eastmont’s girls, who clocked a time of 2:06.99.

Schilperoort also took second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:11.80, followed by Sample with a third place time of 1:15.72. Sample also clocked a third place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, to add team points to the scoreboard.

Hazzard took third place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:27.16.

Young Paytin O’Leary was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 36.7. The fastest time in the 50 was made by Eastmont’s Kelly Hartman at 25.71.

Even though Sunnyside High School is only able to field a team of six swimmers, the team managed a team score of 55 against the larger Eastmont team, which garnered 116 points.

The team will be in the pool again on Sept. 26 against Moses Lake.
