DeSales gets by Vikes, 37-6

MABTON – “We had a bad start and allowed them (DeSales) to rack up 23 points early,” Mabton football coach Trevor Curtis said of last Friday’s 37-6 loss to the Irish.

The Vikings were able to get into the end zone in the second quarter of the game. Daniel Cambron, a linebacker, picked up a fumble and ran the ball for 40 yards to put Mabton on the scoreboard.

It was the first touchdown for the Vikings in three games this season.

“We had six takeaways, but weren’t able to capitalize on them,” said Curtis.

The Mabton defense gave a valiant effort. Salvador Urbina, another linebacker, intercepted the ball and ran it six yards before the Irish stopped him. That gave the Viking offense a first down in the middle of the field.

However, DeSales’ defense was able to keep the drive from getting into the red zone.

Roy Zavala of Mabton rushed for 95 yards on 19 carries. He also hauled in an eight-yard pass from Nico Pina, but was tackled on the spot.

Pina was intercepted three times by the Irish.

Ball carrier Albert Sanchez rushed for 48 yards on nine carries for Mabton, and teammate Isaac Ochoa had five carries for eight yards.

Curtis said Mabton (0-3) will be hosting Riverside during homecoming this coming Friday.

“All we can do is practice because we really want to win,” he said.
