PASCO – The Bickleton Lady Pirates couldn’t defeat the competition at the Tri-Cities Prep Volleyball Invitational this past Saturday, but they came away with a sportsmanship trophy and the respect of the other teams.
The young team lost to Touchet 25-17, 25-10, Sunnyside Christian 25-11, 25-14, Columbia Burbank 25-16, 25-19 and host Tri-Cities Prep 25-11, 25-13.
Lady Pirate Shaylee Tharp spiked the ball for five kills and had two blocks at the net in the four matches. Teammate Lindsay Brown had 13 kills. Bickleton’s Daniela Smith provided nine assists.
Kira Harvey, an eighth-grader, also had two kills over the course of the tournament.
“Kira got down on the ground to save the ball more than a few times,” said Bickleton Coach Katie Leuthauser. “She is a hustler.”
Leuthauser said her team had trouble getting into the winning spirit.
“There was some good play, and there was some not so good play,” she said.
The Bickleton girls will host the Mabton JV team tonight, Sept. 23, and then have a week off before the next game.
“It will be great to get in some good quality practice time, now that I have pin-pointed some things we really need to work on,” said Leuthauser. “I am still very excited to see how the girls rise to the challenges that the other teams in the league will pose.”
