BICKLETON – The 1B Lady Pirates varsity volleyball team hosted the 1A Mabton JV volleyball squad yesterday and managed to come out with a victory in a non-regulation length match.
Bickleton lost the first set 26-24 in a hard-fought battle. The next two sets went the Lady Pirates’ way, 25-11, 25-23.
“Tonight we were slow to start,” said Bickleton Coach Katie Leuthauser. “We picked up the energy, but only enough to squeak by for the win.”
Lady Pirate Shaylee Tharp was a perfect 13-for-13 serving with six kills and three assists. Teammate Lindsay Brown had five kills and two blocks at the net.
Bickleton’s Daniela Smith served up a 14-for-16 performance with six aces for Bickleton. Sydnie Obanion went 17-for-18 from the service line with three aces. Kira Harvey matched her in aces and also slammed one kill.
“We made more mistakes than we should, and played with very little energy,” said Leuthauser. “Regardless though, the girls did manage to hold on to their composure and stay calm even though it was a real close finish. After this week of practice and working on some key things, we will hopefully be back with our energy and determination.”
Bickleton will host Lyle on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
