Police chief interviews underway today

Sunnyside City Manager Don Day and a panel of community members and officials will be interviewing three candidates for Sunnyside police chief today.

Current Deputy Chief Phil Schenck is one of the three finalists vying for Sunnyside’s top cop spot.

Another candidate is Susan J. Shultz, formerly a commander in the city of Bainbridge police department. Shultz also was a police detective in Bremerton and worked as a correctional officer in Kitsap County.

The third candidate is Richard P. Needham, formerly chief of police in Monte Vista, Colo. Needham also trained officers in Colorado and also worked in the city of Alamosa police department and the Alamosa County Sheriff’s office.

Sunnyside has not had a chief of police since March 2012 when former chief Ed Radder retired. Day expects to make a decision by Monday, Sept. 30.
