Mabton girls drop controversial match to Royal City Knights

ROYAL CITY – “We were robbed,” Mabton soccer coach Elizabeth Garcia said of last night’s match at Royal City.

After a hard fought battle on the pitch, the Lady Vikings suffered a 1-0 loss to the Knights.

The match was decided on penalty kicks, said Garcia.

Mabton dominated the match offensively, having six shots on goal.

Royal had just two scoring opportunities.

“I felt like my girls had a slow start adjusting to the turf field but dominated the second half,” said Garcia.

Guadalupe Guaderrama of the Knights denied Mabton twice, and Lady Vikes keeper Cristina Gonzalez shut the door on one of Royal’s kicks.

Mabton’s Esperanza Leon got the ball between the crossbars off a corner kick at the 70-minute mark.

“The center ref validated the goal, however the linesman nulled the goal, claiming a girl nowhere near the play or even approaching the ball was offsides,” Garcia said.

The match was scoreless at the end of regulation, forcing the teams into overtime.

Neither team was able to score, leading to the penalty phase. Gonzalez got the ball past the Knights’ defenders, but Royal’s Flor Araujo and Sam de la Rosa each capitalized on their kicks, giving the Knights a victory.

Garcia said she is eager to face Royal again at home on Oct. 15.

Mabton (0-1, 1-3) tomorrow (Saturday) is scheduled to compete in non-league action against Sunnyside.
