Sunnyside City Manager Don Day Monday night asked the city council for direction on how to calculate salaries and insurance compensation for several non-represented city employees.
Day said that he had neglected to include a salary when the city created the new police commander positions.
In addition, the fire department battalion chief is now the only member of his union, which means he must either choose to join another union, which could result in having to discipline fellow union members, or become a non-represented employee.
Day asked the council for the authority to implement a salary range for the police commander, which will be voted on by council in its next regular session. The council agreed to discuss it next Monday.
Day also told the council that he would like to implement a salary range for the battalion chief position and to give that position a different insurance compensation package. The council agreed to have further discussion on the issue.
