Greyhounds open league play with 10-0 win over Wapato

GRANDVIEW – The Grandview boys soccer team handily blanked visiting Wapato 10-0 this past Saturday in the Greyhounds’ league-opening match.

It is the second win of the season for Grandview, which earlier in the season defeated Toppenish in a non-league affair.

It was Samuel Cuevas who recorded a hat trick for the ‘Hounds. He drew first blood in the fourth minute off an assist by Edgar Cisneros, got the ball between the crossbars in the 29th minute after a pass from Ismael Montes and scored a third goal in the 51st minute, again delivered by Montes.

Montes, too scored a goal for Grandview. He lobbed the ball past the Wapato keeper in the 24th minute of action after teammate Victor Valencia maneuvered it into position.

Valencia scored the fourth goal for the ‘Hounds. Cuevas delivered a pass that Valencia was able to boot into the back of the net at the 34th minute of the match.

Valencia just two minutes later delivered the ball to Cisneros, who capitalized on the momentum. Cisneros wasn’t finished. He scored again just before the intermission whistle.

In the second half, Grandview continued the attack. The Greyhounds took control of the ball from the onset.

George Lara maneuvered the ball past the Wolves’ defenders, spotted Armando Vargas, who got it past the keeper for goal number seven just two minutes after the closing half began.

At the 65-minute mark, it was Antonio Garcia who set up the delivery to Grandview’s Antonio Munoz for the ninth goal.

The 10th and final goal came in the 72nd minute. Alvaro Flores of the Greyhounds capitalized on a penalty kick to put the match away.

Grandview keepers Antonio Garcia and Tony Morales combined for two saves, whereas Wapato keepers Eric Huerta and Rodrigo Campos denied the ‘Hounds 10 times.

The Greyhounds (1-0, 2-5) will this coming Thursday host West Valley.
