BOYS PREP SOCCER
MABTON – The Mabton Viking soccer team this past Saturday dominated the opening half of its game against visiting Warden, but the Cougars were able to pull out a 3-2 win in the final minutes of the match.
Tony Espinosa of Mabton drew first blood in the 17th minute of the match. Mauricio Palominos delivered the ball to him and Espinosa capitalized on an open opportunity.
In the 24th minute Edwin Garcia of the Vikes maneuvered the ball past the Cougar defenders and delivered a pass to teammate Jose Gonzalez, who hit his mark in the back of the net to give Mabton a 2-0 lead.
The Vikings maintained the attack and held the lead going into intermission.
However, Warden’s Malte Seitz just two minutes into the closing half was able to capitalize on a penalty kick, getting the ball past the Mabton defenders.
Undeterred, the Vikings defended the goal for another 18 minutes before the Cougars were able to attack again. That’s when a Warden player hit the back of the net to equalize the match.
Seitz delivered a pass to teammate Jaime Jameson to win the match with just five minutes left on the clock.
“We started good…our team was looking good,” said Mabton Coach Junior Garcia.
He said he believes the Vikings got overconfident, resulting in some missed scoring opportunities.
“We should have put it away,” said Garcia.
Mabton (3-5) had eight scoring opportunities, as did Warden.
Viking keeper Jose Camacho recorded five saves, while Warden’s Jose Gonzalez shut the door on the back of the net six times.
Mabton will tonight (Tuesday) travel to Highland.
