GRANGER – The Lady Viking fastpitch team split a doubleheader in Granger this past Saturday, winning the opener 12-6 and dropping the nightcap by a last-minute run, 13-12.
Mabton took an early lead in the opener, the team’s first league game this season, with a run in the first inning. They added another two in the third, but the Spartans tied up the game in the bottom of the frame.
In the top of the fourth the Lady Vikings took the lead again with four runs and didn’t look back, adding another two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Risa Navarro was pitching for Mabton and struck out seven. She also contributed two hits on offense.
Also pounding the ball were Sandra Gonzalez and Maricela Chavez, both with three hits. Stephanie Morfin was 2-for-2 with two walks.
“Mabton did a great job in the first game with 12 runs and 12 hits,” said Mabton Coach Jesus Sustaita. “We did a good job on scoring runs six out of the seven innings.”
The Lady Vikings also played well in the second game, keeping the score close throughout the game. With the score tied going into the bottom of the seventh, Granger managed to bring home the winning run.
“In the second game, we struggled at pitching and Granger capitalized on errors and walks,” said Sustaita. “Again, we did well batting and scoring runs in the game, but came up short at the end.”
Navarro struggled with control in the game, issuing 17 walks to Spartan batters and only striking out two.
Cristina Gonzalez and Crystal Cruz each went 3-for-5 in the nightcap. Chavez and Navarro got two hits each in the loss.
Mabton (1-1, 1-7) will be hosting Klickitat in a doubleheader tomorrow, Tuesday.
