Ruben Vela, Sr., 76, a longtime resident of Edinburg, Texas entered into Eternal rest on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, in McAllen, Texas.
He was born in Edinburg.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Vela Garza formerly of Brownsville, Texas; one brother, Geronimo (Jerry) Vela of Houston, Texas; his children, Maggie (Esteban) Castro, Lupe (Fidel) Castro, Ruben Vela Jr., Victoria Tovar, Gracie (Jessie) Montelongo, Aaron Vela, Cyndi (Frank) Medina and Eliza Vela; 34 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Camilo Vela Sr. and Francisca (Acevedo) Vela; two sisters, Olivia Salazar and Viola Perez; three brothers, Camilo Jr., Raul and Amado (Amos); one son, James Paul Vela; one grandson, Joe Anthony Medina; and one great-granddaughter, Angel Sugar Castro.
Ruben will be best remembered for the twinkle in his eyes that lit up a room when he shared his love of Christ through his music ministry as a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church in Edinburg, and the joy he shared through years of service via his music ministry at Retama Manor in Edinburg. He shared his passion for music with many having taught the accordion and guitar to countless numbers of young musicians. His greatest pleasure was playing his music with and for his family and friends.
His family would like to extend their special thanks to his caretaker, Laura Garcia, nurse, Mary Garza and to all of the staff at Beyamar Hospice.
A memorial service will be held Monday, April 28, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside, followed by a reception.
