Lady Vikes split twin bill

MABTON – The Lady Vikings earned another win on Tuesday of this week by splitting a doubleheader at home against the Klickitat Vandals.

Mabton won the nightcap 14-10 after first falling behind 10-0 in the third inning. In the bottom of the third, the Lady Vikings had eight runs, capitalizing on free passes issued by the Vandal pitcher.

“Mabton did a great job in the second game capitalizing on all the walks,” said Mabton Coach Jesus Sustaita. “The girls did well in coming back and winning the second game when we were down 10-0.”

In the end, the Lady Vikings scored 14 runs on five hits and 10 walks. Maricela Chavez was the Mabton slugger of the night, going 2-for-3 with a walk.

Pitcher Risa Navarro kept the Lady Vikes in the game with three strikeouts and only one walk. Klickitat scored 10 runs on 12 hits.

The opening game wasn’t quite as good for Mabton. Although they had plenty of opportunities thanks to 15 walks given up by the Klickitat pitcher, they couldn’t capitalize and lost the game 9-6.

“Klickitat came out slugging in the first game and made it difficult to catch up,” said Sustaita.

The Mabton High School Lady Vikings (1-1, 2-8) will travel to Naches Valley this coming Saturday for a doubleheader.
