GRANGER – Playing short-handed again, the Mabton Vikings put up a good defense against host Granger.
That effort, however, was not enough to stave off the Spartans, who won last night’s match 1-0.
The Viking soccer team kept Granger from scoring through the first 15 minutes of play. That’s when a Spartan broke through the ranks and scored the only goal of the match.
“It’s hard when you are missing five or six starters,” said Mabton Coach Junior Garcia.
He is proud of how well the Vikings played last night, though.
“They outshot us pretty good, but we were able to stop them throughout most of the match,” said Garcia, noting Granger had 10 shots on goal and Mabton made five attempts.
“We pretty much played pure defense,” he said.
Holding off a team like the Spartans can be difficult in the best of circumstances. Granger is currently No. 1 in the SCAC league with an 11-1 record.
Mabton’s Juan Macedo kept the ball from hitting the back of the net nine times.
The Vikings (5-7) will host Wahluke tomorrow (Saturday).
