TOPPENISH – Weather-wise, it was a great day to play tennis last Saturday. Scoring-wise, the Grandview High School boys’ and girls’ tennis squads laid a dud.
The host Toppenish Wildcats prevailed over the GHS
boys’ and girls’ teams by 5-0 scores.
Both Grandview squads fell to 1-4 in CWAC play. The Greyhounds have another league match this Tuesday at East Valley before getting a week’s rest.
Last Saturday’s loss to Toppenish’s boys wasn’t all that much of a surprise, considering Grandview was short some of its experienced players.
“Due to school trips and a few conflicts, we were down three varsity players from our boys’ team,” said Grandview Coach Ronda Penwell.
In their absence, though, several Grandview athletes got their chance to step up and play varsity tennis, and didn’t fare all that badly.
“Jesus Gurrola and Giovanni Ramirez stepped up and played their first varsity match, and did a great job,” Penwell said of the duo who filled in at No. 3 doubles play.
Penwell also gave kudos to Alfonso Granados and Joey Saenz for their play at No. 2 doubles, praising the pair for taking the match to three sets.
On the girls’ courts, Penwell said the Lady ‘Hounds suffered an off-day. “There were moments of good play, but we couldn’t quite pull it together to win games,” she said.
The best outing in the girls’ matches, for Grandview, was Esmeralda Jacobo’s play at No. 2 singles. She beat Courtney Stancliffe in the opening set by a 6-4 score, before the Wildcat rallied for a pair of 6-1, 6-4 victories.
