Sinkhole in downtown Sunnyside

Russell Crane Service of Yakima was called in to lift a garbage truck from a sinkhole on Franklin Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets after the truck became stuck yesterday morning (Monday). The problem was discussed at Monday night’s city council meeting. “I am sad to say that late last week we were made aware of a sewer leak in the area,” said City Manager Don Day. “Today we were made more aware.” Day said the city had been preparing to excavate the site, as early as the following day from when the mishap occurred, to determine the extent of the damage. He asked council to approve a contract with Tri-Valley Construction, which it did, but cautioned the council that the cost will be more than originally anticipated due to the extent of the damage, as seen by a city worker climbing out of the hole after the truck was lifted from the sinkhole.

Call me crazy but if you were aware of a sewer leak in that area it only seems logical to me, a crazy person, that you would have barricaded off the area and investigated for such a sinkhole especially when it was in an area traveled by heavy vehicles!!!! Common sense, duh!!!
